Where was she born?
« on: Thursday 09 June 16 15:56 BST (UK) »
Trying to 'tidy up' my sprawling tree, to pass on to younger generation cousin, and going through some of the 'mysteries' that I wasn't able to solve at the time, and left unanswered because they were a little removed from my immediate family. My cousin is a Macdougal and particularly interested in this branch.

Jessie Innes married my great-uncle David James Grierson Macdougal(l) in Hull. He died in 1926, and I haven't been able to find out what happened to Jessie after this. Her parents were John Hepburn Innes and Alice Purvis. In 1901 they were living in Liverpool, the family including Jessie. I had believed she was born in Hull but the census gives her birthplace as ESH (British subject). Could someone tell me what these letters stand for?

Thanks for any help.

A search of the free 1911 census index on Genes Reunited shows the family (minus father John) living in Sculcoates, where Jessie married. Jessie's birthplace is given as Long Island Brookley N York.

The family are also in Sculcoates in 1901, not in Liverpool. Her birthplace is USA, British Subject.
Clearly this has been misread by whoever did the transcription as ESH  ::) (as suggested by smalltowngirl)

Hi,

There are naturalisation papers for John Hepburn Innes in 1891 available on Family search.

This all ties in with the location of Jessie's birth.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. This research goes back a long time (over 10 years), and I lost many emails when my old PC died but I thought I remembered someone telling me that Jessie and her siblings were born in somewhere called Brooklyn in Yorkshire. Now I know what the ESH stands for (and without your help I'd probably still be pondering on that one!) I'm thinking it could be Brooklyn New York. John Hepburn Innes is not a common name, so the naturalisation papers JJ found adds to the evidence - will have to look this up.
Thanks again - it's amazing how fresh eyes can see things that you can spend hours puzzling over.
