Frank Mitchell, chemist of Hull & Leicester
« on: Friday 10 June 16 16:50 BST (UK) »
Hi fellow Rootschatters

I am looking for any information two of the wives and children of Frank Mitchell (son of Edward Hind Mitchell & Ellen Cowley) born April-June 1846, baptised at Holy Trinity on 27 January 1851.

Frank first married Jane Gregory on 25 June 1866 at St Mark's, Hull and they had three children Charles Herbert b Apr 1868, Jane b Jan-March 1870 and Frederick Jul-Sep 1871.

Jane died between Oct & Dec 1871 in Hull and Frank re-married Mary ?? (born c 1859, Yorkshire) before Apr-Jun 1873 and they had five children, three of which were born in Hull - Arthur Apr-Jun 1873, Nora b. Jan-Mar 1875 & Kate Jan-Mar 1877.

Before 1881 Frank and his family moved to Leicester where he had a further two sons to Mary before she died in May 1886 and then he married for a third time to another Mary born in Derby in 1860 and they had a daughter Emily born in 1889.

Any Hull baptism, marriage or burials records of the above family would be appreciated as I am trying make sure I have all my information correct

Thanks in advance

Since my original enquiry some new information has been found recording that a 'Jane Mitchell, wife of a druggist' was an inmate of the Hull Asylum from 1881 to at least 1901 so now wondering if Frank never re-married just lived with the other two women.
Unfortunately the asylums records can not searched online but only seen at Hull Archives. I am now wondering if all the Hull born children were Jane's before she committed and then Frank moved away to Leicester.

Just in case it helps in any way, on Emily's baptism Frank is described as a Surgeon Dentist.

Added: Your original post says she was born 1889 but the baptism I have is 8 Jun 1885 at St George, Emily d/o Frank & Mary Isabella

Hi Jomot

Re Emily I am only going on what was recorded on the 1891 census.

Just checked Free BMDs and 1885 Emily died in June quarter so it looks like had her christened before she died

It looks like there were two Emily's.  The first one was buried at Welford Road Cemetery on 12 June 1885 aged 5 months.  The baptism I mentioned was a private baptism, which often happens when a child is not expected to survive.

In the same grave is Mary Isabella and also another child, Alfred, who was buried 8 May 1886 aged 7 weeks.

Thanks Jomot That's two children I wouldn't have found. Looks like Mary Isabella died giving birth to Alfred

Do you know if there is any more Mitchells buried in Welford Road Cemetery?

Hi Jay

There are numerous Mitchell's buried there, but hard to connect them to your family without more information.  However, there is a burial on 6 Sep 1893 of Frank Mitchell aged 47 of Clarendon Park Road, Knighton.  In the same grave is Ida Mitchell buried 30 May 1895 aged 17 months of Wigston Road, Clarendon Park.  Consecrated Section F546, which is a common grave containing three other apparently unconnected people:

23 Apr 1857, Ann Green aged 46 of Bedford Street
22 Apr 1884, John Ringrose Hall aged 1 of Wheat Street
28 Nov 1901, Mary Billson aged 75 of Welford Road

Added: Two more:

10 Aug 1878 Stillborn Child of Mary Isabel Mitchell of King Street, St Mary. Unconsecrated Section S 3031 (Common Grave)

13 Aug 1880 Stillborn Child of Mary Isabella Mitchell of Stoughton Street, St George. Un S 3109 (Common Grave)
