Local Derby knowledge needed please
« on: Saturday 11 June 16 06:54 BST (UK) »
IS there some local Derby person who can enlighten me please!  :-\

Phillimores Volume 4 is entitled “Marriages at St Alkmund’s, Derby”.

And there is an entry for Thomas Harpur who married Margaret Elde 27th August 1736. They are both ‘of Etwall”. However, it says ‘At Quarne’. I can’t find any information about a church at Quarne. Is it now ‘Quarndon’? Their registers don’t start until 1755 evidently, so are we back to looking at St Alkmund’s?

So where would I have to look for the actual entry? All the references on-line are of transcriptions as far as I can see. I have the marriage licence bond and allegation, which has yet another puzzler in it. See this post

Can anybody look up marriages at St Alkmund’s in the registers?
Or is my next option is to see if Derbyshire Record Office have the registers?

Thanks for any help.

Hi

Suggest the marriage took place Quarn Leicestershire.

THere are transcripts from 1576 although the actual registers start much earlier

But why would marriages at Quorn Leicestershire (there seem to be quite a lot of them at Quarne looking at the transcription  of the register) be in the register for St Alkmund's Derby?  :-\

There are two of them, one in Derbyshire and one in Leicestershire. Both can be found as Quarne at one time.

Some records here and other pages -

Thanks everyone for your input.

So Quarne, Derbyshire is otherwise known as Quarndon.
In the same Philimore's volume there are marriages for Quarndon, but they don't start until 1755, and I'm looking at 1736, so I'm back to St Alkmunds register I guess, even though it says 'at Quarne'.
Query to Derbyshire RO I think!  ;)

Hi

It is all about "Parishes", Quarndon was only a chapel of ease it did not become a Parish Church
Until later.

You need to do a Google search where you will find lots of explanations
