Campsie Cemetery, Lennoxtown
« on: Saturday 11 June 16 22:09 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Ive started transcribing the headstones of this cemetery and have divided the cemetery into sections. I have completed sections 1 & 8, which is the oldest part of the cemetery. The earliest stones relate to the early 1830's. Ive transcribed the details of 1,278 people so far. Some include Surgeons to her Majesty, Queen Victoria and Members of Parliament.

Im running a Facebook Page, which will record my progress....

Updates with also appear on my Twitter Page

Searches / lookups are free, as are requests for pictures of headstones

Cheers

Chris

Hi All,

I've made a slight change to the map plan, in that I've done away with section 8 and just combined it with section 1. It was too difficult making boundaries between the two.

I've now made a serious start on this cemetery. I took over 680 photos yesterday, all of section 6. Early transcription of these stones puts the opening of the lairs here in the 1930's 40's & 50's, although there are some that date from the very late 1800's.

Already Ive come across three knights of the realm in this section. The close backdrop of the Campsies makes for a stunning setting.

Ive transcribed nearly 1,400 people so far. This cemetery is not nearly as big as Cadder or New Kilpatrick, which I've just completed, so I'm hopeful have having completed this before the summer is out.

That's the all the headstones that were readable in the cemetery transcribed.

I took 3,280 photographs
In total there are 5,517 names have been placed on the database.

The earliest reference to a burial in 1810.
There is a war casualty from the Boer War
There is a Luftwaffe member from World War 2
There are 42 people mentioned who died as a result of enemy action in World War 1
There are 17 people mentioned who died as a result of enemy action in World War 2
There are two Knights of the Realm
There are three physicians to the Royal Household when they were visiting Scotland.
There are 261 children under the age of 15
The oldest is a woman by the name McHowat who died in 1999 aged 106.

The most popular surnames in the cemetery
1. Morrison (99)
2. Young (71)
3. Brown (68)
4. Stewart (64)
5. Wilson (59)
6. Campbell (56)
7. Robertson (51)
8. Cameron & Scott (48)
9. Gray (43)
10. McKay & Taylor (39)

Unusual surnames that appear more than three times. By unusual, I mean that the surnames do not appear frequently or at all in other nearby cemeteries and some are unique to this cemetery in the research I have conducted so far.

Bauchop (4)
Blakely (8 )
Buntain (9)
Chappelle (8 )
Craven (11)
Duffield (10)
Fee (7)
Gaillie (6)
McHowat (31)
McKeich (9)
Meffin(10)
Nock (5)
Shanley (7)
Shirreffs (6)
Shovlin (30)
Trower (11)
Vallely (14)

My camera died. 😨 Once I've sourced a new one, I'll tackle Auld Isle in Kirkintilloch & New Kilpatrick Churchyard, should I get relevant permission.
