Carrying on from my last message - a John Caunce was baptised at Longton - abode Rufford in 1821.

Baptism: 18 Mar 1821 St Andrew, Longton, Lancashire, England
John Caunce - [Child] of Henry Caunce & Betty
    Abode: Rufford
    Occupation: Labourer
Notes: [Abode originally entered asLongton, then amended to Rufford]
    Baptised by: Robt. Tongue Minister
    Register: Baptisms 1813 - 1838, Page 53, Entry 421
    Source: LDS Film 1278777

So if Henry's first born son was John -- Henry is possibly the son of a John Caunce.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

There's a marriage on Ancestry on 14 December 1819 at Penwortham of a Henry Scance to an Elizabeth Moss. Longton was I believe within the parish of Penwortham.

Could the name have been misheard by the Vicar? The writing on all the entries seem to be the same, I'm not sure that the signatures are written by the actual people but seem to be all in the same hand.

If you then do a search for Henry Scance the only entry that comes up is the marriage.

Did Henry die on 18th May 1870 of Holmes Wood, Rufford , gamekeeper to Sir T Hesketh for upwards of 44 years
Source - Lancaster Gazette under the heading Tarleton

A Henry Caunce of Rufford obtained his game certificate in 1838 - which could have been a renewal

Sorry, the 1841 census is Tarleton District 4 (not Rufford). The 1851 census(still Tarleton) is easier to read where he appears to be 59 and still Gamekeeper with wife Elizabeth (Betty) and 5 children. By 1861 he appears to have become a farmer and his eldest son a Gamekeeper.

There was another Henry Caunce in the area who was a farmer. there are several baptisms
Baptism -27 May 1832 St Mary, Tarleton, Lancashire, England
Henry Caunce - Son of Henry Caunce & Betty
Abode- Tarleton
Occupation- Farmer

Baptism: 17 Jun 1840 St Mary the Virgin, Rufford, Lancashire, England
Hugh Caunce - Son of Henry Caunce & Mary
    Abode: Rufford
    Occupation: Farmer
Baptism: 4 Oct 1840 St Mary the Virgin, Rufford, Lancashire, England
Jane Caunce - Dau of Henry Caunce & Betty
    Abode: Tarleton
    Occupation: Gamekeeper

Henry ought to appear in the Gamekeepers Book, at Lancashire Archives.

A Lord of the Manor could register a single Gamekeeper (and presumably pay tax on the post) at a time. Anyone else they employed would only be an assistant.

The two Gamekeepers Books, each the size of a thinnish paperback, cover a couple of hundred years. The entries are usually half a page of scrawl, but sometimes mention the previous employment of the person being appointed.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
