James Ashwell the pig stealing convict
« on: Thursday 16 June 16 13:09 BST (UK) »
Hi all, just wondering if anyone knows anything about James Ashwell, sent to VDL aboard the delightful princess Charlotte.  We know he received a conditional pardon but are chasing more info.  Thanks for any help.

Hi

Welcome to rootschat.

There are a couple of Bedfordshire James Ashwells in Bedfordshire records for stealing pork/pigs but they don't mention the 'Princess Charlotte'

Re. the offence, the Cambridge Chronicle 26 Mar 1824 reported that Thos Dilley and James Ashwell stole " ... a quantity of pickled pork, of the value £9" from a house in Biggleswade.

In reporting the transfer of the prisoners from the County Gaol at Bedford to the hulk Justitia the Windsor & Eton Express, 8 May 1824 described James as " ... of Langford".

This was at a time when the death sentence was being replaced with transportation.

The newspaper report of the Bedfordshire Assizes where James was tried described "Sentence of death was passed ... on one unfortunate while "Sentence of death was recorded ..." against James and his accomplice - a fine distinction!!.

Well my father is from Clifton and he has been tracing the family and he believes that its James Ashwell b1796 Langford married Mary crowther in biggleswade 30 Oct 1815. Son of James Ashwell and Sarah Harris.  Dad has been doing a great job but seems to have hit a wall at the moment.  Thanks for the help.

As per the BEDS FHS Surnames Index CD

Mary Crowther, single woman married Biggleswade 1815
&
James ASHALL, single man of Langford, married Biggleswade 1815

There's also a baptism of a John ASHELL in Biggleswade in 1816

Need to check the Biggleswade PR marriage of 30 Oct 1815 for any more info
