John Chapman. Ware
« on: Friday 17 June 16 02:55 BST (UK) »
I'm researching a family member, John Chapman who was born about 1780 in Ware. He was a Bargeman. He married Sarah Riddle in 1806. I can't find a birth or baptism record for him and I'm trying to prove that his parents were Thomas Chapman and Mary Rowley. Does anyone have him in their tree. Thanks

Sorry Sue, I messed that one up. The trees say Yes John who married Sarah Riddle was the son of Thos and Mary Rowley. The son Thos I mentioned prev. was Johns brother.
Sorry again, just home from hospital and still a little confused ::)

Hi
There's a Thomas and Mary Chapman at Standon as the previous gentleman said.
John Chapman s of Thomas and Mary 3.6.1780
Brothers and sisters Thomas 28.5.1777,James 26.10.1778 ,Mary Rowley 4.1.1782 ,Robert 3.11.1782,Charles 18.11.1783,Robert 23.11.1784,Nancy 17.2.1787 and Edmund 13.0.1788.

John is a owner occupier on the Land Tax of 1798 at Ware.
You probably already know Thomas and Mary were married at Standon 1.5.1775

I should also probably point out there is a Jno fortune s of James and Mary Chapman baptised at Ware 18.7.1783.
A possible marriage at Great Amwell to Mary Francis 26.12.1774.
And in 1851 on the census John Chapman born 1781 of Standon is a farmer

Thank you both for your help.
I have been looking on the Hertfordshire archives webpage and I found a marriage register for John and Sarah in 1806. Does anyone know if I ordered it would it show the parents.

Hi
I'm afraid it won't .Before 1837 there are just the names of the bride and groom, their martial status ,which parish they came from and the two witnesses.

The marriage of John Chapman and Sarah Chapman at Standon 8.11.1804 is unusual as it gives more witnesses -Thomas,Ann,James Chapman,Mary Day and Samuel Pickett.

It seems the Vicar was breaking the rules and instead of the standard printed form used an old style parchment journal. You may be lucky and the marriage at Great Amwell might give you an easy recognizable witness or one of the couple may need the permission of a parent who was named because they were under 21 but that would be unusual.

Sorry

copy of marriage is on FindMyPast  only gives witnesses as Andrew Newton and Ann Wright
they were married by Banns on 7th May 1806
afraid as ciderdrinkers says rarely are parents on these marriages not even as witnesses
