Songer, Souger, Songar, Longer
« on: Sunday 19 June 16 11:03 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to find out about the family of an Arthur with different spellings (probably typos)who appears with the surname Songer, Souger, Songar and Longer in different records on ancestry. (My subscription to them has lapsed and I'm not sure that I'm going to renew due to the expense) Arthur was born in Raydon, although some records say Reydon, both in Suffolk and married Ann Elizabeth Burt of Norton St Andrew, Suffolk in 1877. Ann died aged 26, as a result of childbirth one week after the birth of their son, William Arthur.
Is anyone able to verify the surname and give any info about any of the families. I Know that Ann's parents were William Burt 1820-1899 but I know nothing more of him and Esther Hannah Roope Abt 1821-1909 of Abington, Cambridgeshire and again I know very little about her. Esther and William are both buried at Norton, Suffolk. I know nothing about the 'Songers' except that Ann died at Boreham (Crossing??)
Burt, Cockrill, Craske, Debenham, Double, Grimwade, Grimwood, Hilder, Mayhew, Ray. All from  West Suffolk around the Bury St. Edmunds area.
Simpson, Pittendreigh, Arthur.   Aberdeenshire

it seems on 1881 census although Arthur had married Emily Burt in Nov 1880 -Emily is not entered as his wife!

I am transcribing census from the image (as we are supposed to do for copyright reasons)- not using other transcriptions
1881
Boreham Essex
Arthur Songer Head widower 27 Signalman GER Raydon Suffolk
William A son 2 Boreham
Emily Burt sister in law unmarried 27 Housekeeper Norton Suffolk
RG11 1765 130 17

possibly they kept their marriage secret as I think it was illegal to marry your sister in law at that time

Arthur was born in Raydon, although some records say Reydon, both in Suffolk and married Ann Elizabeth Burt of Norton St Andrew, Suffolk in 1877.

The marriage is in a newspaper 13 Jan 1877
On the 1st inst. St Andrews Norton
Annie Elizabeth Burt was the eldest daughter of W Burt. Norton
Arthur Songer was the second son of J Songer  of Ipswich .

Another report in a different paper has "John Songer of Somersham"

Thanks everyone so far, it's going to take some time to get my head around all this. I presume that the newspaper reference I have of Ann's death stating Boreham crossing, was the railway crossing. I had seen a quote referring to Somersham but not the other. What's this about marrying his sister in law!!! All very interesting. The reason I have put out the enquiry is because William Burt's family lived in Norton and was a contemporary of my 3x Gt grandfather from the same village who was also a Burt. Up till now I have been unable to link the two Burt families. There may or may not be one. However in a village of only about 800 people there may be a link which has yet to be discovered.

I think Arthur Songer's full name was Arthur Deaves Songer (Deaves was his mother's maiden name)
Birth reg FreeBMD
Arthur Deaves Songer Sept qtr 1853 Samford reg dist
He did marry his sister in law in 1880 but still described her as Emily Burt and as being single  in 1881 census -probably as it was against the law to marry your deceased wife's sister at that time
by 1891 they are admitting they are married
1891
14 stirling St Ipswich
Arthur Songer Head M 37 Raiway signal man Raydon
Emily wife 37 Norton
Wiliam A son 12 scholar Boreham Essex (this would be the son with Ann Elizabeth nee Burt)
Frederick G son 9 Norton (this is the son with Emily nee Burt - so William A and Frederick G would be half brothers and cousins as well)
Alfred Charlton lodger U 28 Railway signalman
RG12 1466 61 23

1901 Emily (and Ann Elizabeth's ) mother is visiting
16 Barrell St Stoke St Mary Ipswich
Arthur Songer Head M 47 Railway signalman Raydon
Emily 47 wife Norton
Esther H Burt visitor widow 77 living on own means
RG13 1776 8 8

Arthur died 1940
this is his probate record (he had lived at the same address since at least 1911

Arthur Deaves Songer of Parkside Hadleigh Rd Ipswich died 9 Feb 1940  at Stour Villa Shotley gate Suffolk
Probate Ipswich 19 Aptil to Albert Edward Garnham, newsagent
Effects £3066 12s 4d resworn £3016 12s 4d

I will concentrate on the Burt family for you - what is your 3x gt grandfather's name and d.o.b.
