Hi CaroleW
Thanks for your reply, I’ve found David Clarke, Sam’s father, and family in the 1901 Clay Cross, Derbyshire Census but hadn’t found Sam at that time or his marriage to Elizabeth as mentioned below.
From the information given by Sandra, Sam and family were living in 1901 at Altrincham, Cheshire.

Hi Sandra
Thank you also, for all your information, I’ve just phoned a distant relative and she told me she believed that Sam did run a shop in Canada.
I met Phyllis briefly years ago when she came over here to visit her relatives.
My late father talked about Phyllis but never mentioned Winifred or Vernon, I never knew of their existence.
Working  as a shopkeeper,  I can’t see the connection with the “Hamilton Guardian” Perhaps he only sold the newspaper!!
With all these wet Summer days over here It’ll certainly keep me occupied sifting through and sorting out all the messages.

Thank you both once again, your information is really appreciated.
Kind regards
Bill

You're very welcome, hope it helps fill the gaps.  Perhaps an e-mail to Hamitlon Public Library might throw up obituaries for Samuel and Phyllis  ???

Canada Voters List 1958 shows Phyllis and Daniel (civil service) McLean at 37 Beechwood Avenue. Also a Robert Simpson (truck driver)

If you think Phyllis had a son, named after his father - http://www.canada411.ca/ shows one living in Hamilton.
