Bethesda football team
« on: Monday 20 June 16 21:05 BST (UK) »
Hi All

Could anyone help or point me in the right direction please.

We (my family) think my Taid played football for Bethesda (United, Comrades, Victoria or Athletic?)
His name was Keith Williams (or Glasspoole, he changed his name) He was born in 1911 so i'm thinking in the 1930's or 40's. He was from Brynteg/Coedpoeth near Wrexham.

Are there any records kept for an amateur football team. Could I find out which years he played. whether they won anything significant in those years etc?

It's a fair way to travel these days from Wrexham to Bethesda never mind in the 30/40's but my Dad remembers a car being sent for him every Saturday to play football and he seems to think Bethesda.

Thanks

The local weekly newpapers in the area     may still have copies in their archives  or on microfiche.

Generally, there are no records of amateur football teams. Bethesda Comrades were a team immediately after WWI so too early. Bethesda Victoria were in the Welsh Combination League from 1930.  This league was superseded in 1934 by the Welsh League (North) of which Penrhyn Quarry were members. After the war Penrhyn Quarry became Bethesda Athletic.

If he was playing in the 1930s, an excellent newspaper for football was the Wrexham Leader. This covered football in North Wales and beyond. Wrexham Archives and Local Studies have copies on microfilm.
