Louis Canslaw of Jersey
« on: Tuesday 21 June 16 00:10 BST (UK) »
Hi, looking for any info on the above Louis....whose name could also be Cansell, Canslan or Canslawr.

Louis was born c 1847 and gave his birth place as being Jersey.  Louis was a mariner and he was drowned when his ketch overturned here in Tasmania during a storm.  It has been very difficult to find anything about his early life.  So if someone could point me in the right direction as to where to look, I would be very grateful.

Cheers

Was it definitely Jersey Channel Islands?

What year did he die?

Hi, gave his birth place as being "Jersey".  He was also mentioned in a newspaper article as being 'a jerseyman'.  He died in Tasmania, Australia 1873.

Cheers

The only 'possible' that I can see is a Louis Canelu (1851) born c1846 to Frederic and Tranquille, he's in the 1861 as Louis Candon. He is a servant but one of his brothers is a sailor. Two of his older brothers are in the St Brelade baptism registers as Cancloud, sons of Frederic Cancloud and Jeanne Tranquille Le Tellier.

Thanks for your reply....I did find that 'Louis' in the 1851 census, but didn't find the family in 1861. But didn't look at that spelling of the name, there have actually been quite a few spellings, also in one instance his 'Louis' became 'Lewis'!.

I did find some other spellings of his name, mainly due to his being a seaman and there were some voyages that had him listed.  He was definitely in this hemisphere during at least from 1869, haven't found anything earlier than this date.

He was working as an AB on a couple of ships sailing from Hobart to Sydney.  Haven't found what boat he came from the UK on.  It probably looks as though I'm not really going to get a lot further with his origins - too many spellings of his name!.  But will look at the Cancloud family.

But many thanks anyway :)

You could try contacting the Societe Jersiaise. If he began his seafaring life in Jersey he may have paid into the Seaman's Benevolent Fund and they have those records.

Evening....I have been looking at Ancestry and the Jersey BDM's today to try and get an idea as to this family and what happened to them.

I found the 1871 Census at St. Brelade which looks like a  Frederick CANCLON (58) (but has been transcribed as CANDON) a Farm Labourer and a wife Marie (52) - no other kids mentioned.

Tried to find a death for Jeanne Tranquille Le Tellier or any of the above names, but unfortunately no luck there at this time.

So not sure if this is the Dad Frederic(k)or not in the 1871 census.  The spellings of the name have been very prohibitive and I've got not idea if Canclon, Cadon, Cancloud, Camcloud actually sound anything like Canslaw. Probably getting a bit beyond me at this time!!.

I'm about out of any other thoughts at this time, so your idea to contact the Seamans Benevolent Fund is a great idea....many thanks for that!.

Cheers

There is a death in the St Brelade indexes between 1854 and 1866 on page 68 of a Tranquille Camcloud. I'll have a mooch around for a second marriage for Frederic.
