Payne in Four Horseshoes
« on: Thursday 23 June 16 11:54 BST (UK) »
Looking for the 1881 census returns for St Albans of Joseph Payne who in 1871 was living in the small hamlet of Four Horseshoes (Smallford). Joseph would have been 57 and wife Elizabeth 45 and in particular am looking for son Walter who would be 14.
Any information would be much appreciated.

That's great Kay99, many thanks.
Incidentally did Joseph have a trade?

Sorry - Yes he was an Ag Lab.      I found both places in this old map  http://maps.nls.uk/view/102343346#zoom=4&lat=5064&lon=4921&layers=BT

That is fantastic, thank you so much.
The strange thing is that Walter in the 1891 had moved to Nuneaton in Warwickshire, had married a local woman in 1888 and was working as a coal miner!
