William Carter and wife Elizabeth Chapman - brick wall
« on: Friday 24 June 16 00:50 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am attempting to trace my Grandma's Carter line (her maiden name).

Census records are pretty consistent that my ancestor William Carter was born in Wrotham, Kent about 1791/92. The last census shows him as a carrier and farmer of 8 acres employing 2 labourers. He married Elizabeth Chapman, daughter of John and Esther, in 1821 by banns in East Peckham, Kent and they are both of the parish according to the record. They baptised their kids as Baptists.

Their children:

Elizabeth Carter 1823–
Thomas Carter 1824–
John Carter 1826–1894
William Carter 1828–1912
James Carter 1830–
Robert Carter 1832–
George Carter 1835–
Obediah Henry Carter 1837–1910
Esther Carter 1840–
Lewis Barnaby Carter 1843–1925

I found a baptism for a William Carter to a William and Mary in 1792 in Wrotham with siblings Robert, Elizabeth, and Thomas, but not sure if this is my William as Carter is a very popular name. Any help learning more about William Carter b. 1792 is appreciated!! He died in Wrotham Heath in 1877, by the way.

Going forward and not back I'm afraid however,
William Carter left a will, probate filed 9 March 1877, Obadiah Carter the son and William Forrest, Tailor both of Wrotham Heath are executors.
It may gives clues as to daughters marriages and if children are still alive, a family tree has The youngest Lewis Barnaby Carter going to New Zealand.

Apparently, Obediah CARTER married  a CARTER too, in 1868 - Charlotte.
And some speculation that  she may be a first Cousin and her father was a Robert CARTER.

"Obadiah Henry Carter (1837-1910). Died in the Maidstone, Kent area. There are various family trees at Ancestry which state that her parents were Robert Carter 1795-1874 and Ann Treadwell 1797-1864, and that Robert Carter was from Wrotham. There is a baptism at Wrotham of a Robert Carter 19 Jan 1794 son of William and Mary, which would then make Obadiah and Charlotte first cousins"

Cheers
