Ernest J Nicholls and Dorothy May Ashby Marriage Birmingham
« on: Monday 27 June 16 16:42 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I was recommended this site by a friend of mine and just wondered if someone could give me some tips or what to try next as I have come against a brick wall in my research on one side of my family tree and it has made me come to a complete halt.

I'm trying to find a marriage for my grandparents in Birmingham. I've found them both in the election registers and so have narrowed it down that the marriage must have taken place between 1935 and 1939 but I just can't find it anywhere. I've tried different locations  and omitting names but I just can't trace this marriage.

It's Ernest side that I'm struggling with but am sure finding this marriage will open this gate for me to continue research. I never knew him but have estimated his birth to around 1898. Dorothy May or May Ashby was born in 1907 in Moseley, Birmingham and died in 1995. I've gone back quite far on her side.

I am a member of ancestry but just not had any luck with it.

Any help is much appreciated.

Best regards,

Annette

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Is there any possibility that Dorothy had been married previously making Ernest her second husband?

What year was their first child born (don't give names of anybody still living)

EDIT - it was 1938 followed by another in 1940

Hi Annette

Welcome to rootschat

Have you any idea where and when Ernest died.

Where were they living when you found them on the electoral register.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick responses.
She definitely wasn't married before.
I found them living together in Pershore Road in 1939 and found May living in Moor Green Lane in 1935.
Ernest died around 1965 but haven't got his death record yet.

Thanks again
Annette

So if May/Dorothy was Ashby in 1935 and their first child was born 1938 - any marriage logically would be between those dates

However - if Ernest was born around 1898 as you think - he would have been 40 when that child was born.  I wonder was he already married and they just lived together?

If that's correct then they could only have married after his first wife died unless they divorced first.

Perhaps we need to look for a marriage from 1938 onwards

I found them living together in Pershore Road in 1939

Was that on the 1939 register which should give a date of birth for them both  :)

Ernest died around 1965 but haven't got his death record yet.

There is a Birmingham death in 1965 with a probate record giving an address of 32 Lee Bank Road - died 17 February 1965 -probate to Beryl Margaret Nicholls (spinster)

That ties in with this death reg
Ernest Nicholls
Death Registration   March qtr 1965
Age at Death 76
Reg district Birmingham
9c / 718

He is not your Ernest as he is living at that address before WW2

Hello,

Again thanks for the help. I did find them on the 1939 electoral register  but it only has their names and the address as whether they were the owner or a dweller, unless there's a more in depth record of the register I can look at and that would help. I have attached the electoral register. She is listed as Nicholls on this register and as I knew her very well I am 98% sure she married him before her 1st child (son) but I know that family can surprise you hence the 98%.

Thanks again

Annette

Are we sure those are the right children? I'm only asking because there is this Nicholls/Ashby  marriage in Birmingham:

Marriages Dec 1931
Ashby    Violet E    Nicholls    Birmingham S.    6d   159
Nicholls    Ernest B    Ashby    Birmingham S.    6d   159

Just a red herring I expect!
