Hello

I think I'l start with that birth cert but I'm absolutely sure they did get married....if they were married in the forces would there still be a record?
I'll see what that birth cert comes up with first.

Thank you again for all of your help...I really appreciate it.

As an added note he was down as an caster (aircraft parts) on his son's birth cert. I remember stories being told of him working for the war effort in the tunnels underneath factories...this might sound ridiculous

And another added note which adds to the ridiculous is they seemed to call each other by different names for example his son was christened Ernest John too but we always called him Uncle Peter and I always thought his name was Peter. Dorothy May was either Dorothy or May and I vaguely remember Dorothy May or May referring to her husband as Harry...so could he may be have not been Ernest despite the paperwork saying he WAS Ernest....could he maybe have been Harry? My family is indeed an interesting one!!!

Thanks again

If you found Dorothy/May on the 1935 electoral register under her maiden name of Ashby then any marriage should be from 1935 onwards

The only marriage between an Ernest Nicholls and an Ashby is the 1931 one discounted in an earlier reply

No search combination shows any marriage record and their first child was born 1938 before WW2

No, perfectly possible. There were many shadow factories in B'ham working for the WD.
Most were old & some did have tunnels. These originally would have housed the engines & motors that drove the machinery above.
They could easily have been utilised for war work.
Parts for Spitfires & Lancasters were made in B'ham.

One thing is for sure - the family identified by CaroleW all end up in Birmingham and from a quick check were living at 129 Devonshire Street from 1927.

Can't be sure of course but I think mother Emily died 1934 Birmingham and that the Emily shown with William after is a daughter Emily who was born in 1910.   Daughter Emily is living there alone in 1945 and think father William died 1942 or 1943 (3 possible death entries).

So, if the birth certificate for Ernest Nicholls born Walsall reveals the same birthdate as the Ernest with May in 1939 then you have a firm lead to your Nicholls line.

Hello

Ok the birth cert has come and it's him. Date of birth 18/12/07 so at least I can carry on from here. Still flummoxed about the marriage but might just have to stay flummoxed.

Thanks so much for all of your help

Best regards,

Annette
