New York Newspapers   http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html

If you search this site for "Captain William C Thompson" it returns 15 hits (not all the same person). One refers to the death of Alexander Hyslop Thompson and mentions his father, William C Thompson and the Sarah Sands.

There are several for 1886 and the death of William C Thompson - does look like "your" William.

Re.the New York papers, check out the item "New York NY Evening Post 1886" (should be the 3rd listed)

Everything seems to add up now, thanks to the Fulton site.

An index prepared years ago sent me on the wrong track - they indexed Alexander Thompson's death and mentioned his son-in-law's surname as ALSOP instead of HYSLOP.

Just goes to prove the old saying to go the source as much as possible.

Westoe:

Thanks for all the lovely links which I will continue to go through.

I haven’t had any luck with the lithograph image of “Sarah Sands” by James Henry Lynch but I have made a note to keep on looking.

Google books are proving very informative.  The article about the ownership of the “Pacific” filled in some gaps as well.

And now I have conquered the Fulton history website – well, what a treasure trove !
