Wills that are surplus
« on: Tuesday 28 June 16 12:30 BST (UK) »
Hello

If this is in the wrong place, please feel free to move it.

Over the years, in pursuit of my branch of the family, I have purchased quite a few wills. Some are relevant to my family, a lot are not. They are the result of late night thoughts that they might be relevant with no evidence. More money than sense, I suppose. Some are transcribed, I could do the rest. I feel that since I have them, I could make them available to others, especially where they are transcribed I would only have to move a file.

But where to?

It would be a lot of documents to put on Rootschat, which I don't think they would like. Is there somewhere, with open access, that I can put the files and just leave them there? I guess it should be somewhere a future genealogist would look or could be directed to.

Many thanks

Regards

Suds

Hi Suds,

I've moved your topic to here on RootsChat, where you can post details of surplus family history documents.

The sections are divided by surname to make things a little easier to find:

Thanks for that suggestion. I hadn't come across that site.

Having looked at it it raises a further question about copyright. It suggests that the transcriber holds the copyright. I wonder if that is correct. If I have purchased the will from a county archive and then transcribed it does the archive have any rights?

I'll have to consider it some more.

Suds

I'd be happy to do that. Let's say there are 10 wills, 20 pages of word document. There may be more, I've not checked.

How do I put that sort of documentation on Rootschat?

Suds,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.  :(

You'd do one new topic per person, with a PDF attachment.

You can attach pdfs as attachments on RootsChat. There is a 500KB limit per post so you'd need to make it a black & white PDF. If it's a word document, then you can "print to PDF". IF you want help on how to technically do that it's probably best to ask how to do it on the "Technical Help" part of the forum here.
