Richard Willoughby James marriage to Jane - Illogan? St Hilary or Breage
« on: Wednesday 29 June 16 19:23 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone.

I have Richard Willoughby James (mother was Christian Willoughby), baptised 1 June 1787 in Illogan. One of his sons was James Willoughby James, baptised 19 May 1822 in Illogan.

Marriage wise, I can find (on OPC) only TWO marriages to a Jane: Breage, 28 Dec 1808 and St Hilary 2 April 1814.

Neither, however, have Willoughby as a middle name. Richard also had, amongst other children, Mary, born 1817 so hopefully, Richard was married between 1808 and 1817.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please?

Phil

thank you very much

His son James was baptised in 1822 as plain James, not James Willoughby.

I don't think Richards marriage to Jane was the one at Breage.   Baptisms for their children at Breage show this Richard was a miner, not a blacksmith.

1851 Census shows Jane bc.1789 Gerrans.

That's interesting. I have a marriage entry for him on 26 Nov 1855 with Willoughby as his middle name.

Perhaps he simply 'adopted' it because it was his fathers second name, and grandmothers maiden name.

Yes. I was just trying to link them.

Could the marriage be at St Hilary or maybe there are still parish transcrptions incomplete?

marriages look to be complete for  Breage & St Hilary's for that period

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/coverage/coverage-by-parish/

had you noticed that the eldest daughter in 1851, Ann, was born in Plymstock, Devon. There is a baptism 2 June 1816 in Plymstock for Ann Norah James, daughter of Richard, blacksmith, & Jane living at Oreston, Devon.
There's a marriage at Charles the Martyr in Plymouth, 10 June 1815, of Richard James & Jennefer Murton, Jane & Jennifer are used interchangeably in Cornwall. The baptism for the couple's first son Joseph in Illogan 10 Aug 1817 has son of Richard, blacksmith, & Jennifer, this Joseph was buried 14 Feb 1819.
Working backwards from Jennefer Murton, there's a baptism in Gerrans 28 Dec 1788 for a Jennifer Murton, daughter of Stephen & Grace.

I'm absolutely gobsmacked!!!!

Never thought of looking at siblings in the census returns or expecting a marriage in Devon....and I lived in Plymstock for a while!!!!

A real lesson learned.....

I can't thank you enough - a brilliant find!

That's put the cat amongst the pigeons - completely altered the Richard James' spouse line!!!!

Best wishes

Phil  :)
