O'Malley Potato Famine imigrants to Canada
« on: Thursday 30 June 16 22:16 BST (UK) »
I'm interested to find out if any of my ancestors emigrated from Mayo to Canada around 1847. They may have passed through Gross ile, Quebec. How would I begin this search? Thanks.
Ireland: Mayo - O'Malley, Malley, Currigan, Lynchacan. Antrim - McAuley. Louth - Byrne. Down - Smith.

England: Lancashire - O'Malley, McCauley, Foster.

John O'Malley, age 30, from Mayo. Died between 15 and 21 Aug. 1847 at Grosse Isle quarantine station. Arrived on Erin's Queen from Liverpool, England. Bridget O'Malley arrived on same ship and died there, too.

Yes I saw that entry, thanks Ianarman. Although, it seems odd that there's only one O'Malley that comes up as there's loads of O'Malley's in Mayo.

The usual method is to work back from known facts, tracing your ancestors in Canada and then searching for Irish records.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi aghadowey, I'm revisiting my quest. The relatives that I've found in Canada, I can trace to see when they arrived and it's much later, and had no connection to the famine. Since I have family from Mayo, I feel it's reasonable to assume that some must have fled the famine and came to Canada. I'm hoping to go to visit a memorial in Griffintown, Montreal where over 6,000 Irish were buried. I would like to find another way to research if any of my family came through. Any suggestions please?
