Whibonog, Llanybydder. Finding deeds or rent books?
« on: Friday 01 July 16 16:05 BST (UK) »
My family farmed Whibonog, Ty Mawr, Llanybydder and also the farm just down the hill at Blaenwern. On modern maps, Blaenwern is marked but you can find Whibonog at GR 558430. As a relative novice, how do I get to the old land records for these two properties?

Whibonog is reputed to have been started by my great-great grandfather John Thomas (1804-1904) and his father James farmed Blaenwern. There's a poem about John in the Carmarthen Journal for 1904.

Since Carmarthenshire doesn't [yet] have a county archive, how do I go about finding out more please?
Thomas, Davies, Jones, Walters, Daniel in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. That should narrow it down a bit!
Vincent: Fressingfield, Suffolk, Stockton & Sunderland.
Murtha/Murtaugh: Dundalk & Sunderland
Ingram: Cairnie by Huntly, Scotland then Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.
Bardouleau: London - in memory of my stepmother Annie Rose née Bardouleau who put up with a lot from me.

Cerdd o 1898 am J Thomas Whibonog pan oedd yn 94 oed

A poem from 1898 about J Thomas Whibonog when he was 94 years old.

Y Brython Cymreig
7 October, 1898

HEN WR BACH WHIBONOG,

Sef Mr John Thomas, Whibonog,
yr hyn-afgwr henaf
ymhlwyf Llanybyther.

Mae hen wr bach Whibonog
Ar fin ei ganmlwydd oed,
A'i galon eto'n fywiog,
Er nad yw'n sionc ei droed
Fe ydyw teyrn ein hardal,
Yr hynaf yn y plwy';
Yr Arglwydd wnelo'i gynal,
Am faith flynyddau'n hwy.

Mae wedi gweled gwanwyn,
A haf a hydref oes;
A rhan o'i anaf brigwyn,
A llawer corwynt croes;
Bun ffermwr gonest, diwyd,
Trwy gydol gyrfa faith;
Heb weled llawnder golud,
Heb weled prinder gwaith
.
Mae'n gwybod beth yw cario
Crefyddol galon bur,
Mae'n gwybod beth yw gweithio
Ac amaethyddu tir;
Fe gafodd dir Whibonog
Yn noeth fynydd-dir gwael,
Fe'i gwnaeth yn dyddyn coediog
Heb harddach lie i'w gael.

Pan oedd yn meddu hoenedd,
Fe blanodd lawer perth;
Am bedwar ugain mlynedd
Fe brofodd faint ei gwerth;
Mae llawer coeden dalfrig
Yn awr yn herio'r gwynt;
Ond egwan a chrynedig
Yw'r llaw a'i planodd gynt.

Mae ganddo blant ac wyron,
Oes, ac orwyron lu,
Yn 'nawr arifn yr afon
Sy'n nawdd i'r hen dadcu;
Mae'r cydgyfoedion lawer
Oedd ganddo'n llanc diglwy',
A blwng ystormydd amser
Oll wedi eu difa hwy.

Mae wedi gweled rhoddi
Ei wraig mewn beddrod Ilaith,
Fu'n ddyddan yn ei gwmni
Bron saith-deg blwydd yn faith;
Er iddo dreulio bywyd
O gorff a meddwl iach,
Gwnaeth hyny argraff enbyd
Ar rudd yr hen wr bach.

Rwy'n hoffi cael ei gwmni,
Rwy'n hoffi gwel'd ei wen
Am lawer haedda'i barchu
Heblaw am fod e'n hen.
I'w gwmni hoff fe'm denodd
Cyn hyn i aml dd'od,
Trwy adrodd am r'hyn welodd
Flynyddoedd cyn fy mod.

Mae'n eithriad 'mhlith dynolryw;
I'w gweled ar ei rudd,
Mae nodau iechyd heddyw,
Ac nid yw'n welw brudd,
Mae llonder yn ei galon
Yn awr ar fin ei gant,
A blodau gwyn yr Almon
Ar ben pob un o'i blant.

Llanybyther. D. 0. JENKINS.

My father was Dewi Wyn Thomas (Farmed at Blaenwern, then Chiwbonog)
My Grandfather was Hereward Thomas (Farmed at Blaenwern)
My Great Grandfather was David Thomas (Keepers Lodge, Brecfa)

We must be related.  I still live in Llanybydder.

Shwmae,

Great-uncle Hereward (who I never met) was my Mamgu's brother-in-law (Rachel Anne in Glanamman). We are 1st cousins, twice-removed!!

There is indeed a lot of Thomas DNA still circulating round Llanybydder.

It is nice to "meet you". I'll send a private message with some more personal info.

Kind regards,
Malcolm
