Cotton Family Norton in Hales Bellaport Hall and Drayton
« on: Saturday 02 July 16 15:29 BST (UK) »
Dear Friends,

I am trying to see if there is a link between the Cotton family of Bellaport Hall, Norton in Hales and the the following;

Beatrice Cotton born 1688 in Norton in Hales daughter of Phillip (some sources say William) Cotton and his wife Beatrice Birch. Beatrice Cotton married William Justice of Knighton Hall, Knighton, in 1710 at Drayton and secondly Jasper Peck 1718 at Drayton (Burkes Landed Gentry Peck pedigree). I think there is a monument to a Beatrice Peck who died 1767 in Drayton church.

If anyone can make a link to the Cottons of Bellaport or indicate another ancestry I would be most grateful.

Thank you.
Peter

There are some entries on family search; Beatrice Birch marries Phillip Cotton; Beatrice Cotton baptised 29/6/1688;mother dies 17/8/1689 it says wife of Phillip-all in Norton in Hales. There is a marriage for a Beatrice Cotton 7/11/1710, but it is unclear as to whether this is the same daughter who was born in 1688-married in Market Drayton to a Gulielmum Justice.

Hello
You may want to look at Phillip Cottons Will of 1714 on FindMyPast
It gives the confirmation about Beatrice and his grandson Phillip Justice.
His sister Sarah Cotton is mentioned and two marriage settlements I think for himself.(the first to Beatrice and the second to Lettice). There's mention of a William Cotton but I can't work out who he is.
His father's Will Phillip cotton senior 1682 mentions sisters Mary,Sarah ,Deborah (buried 13.12.1684 at Drayton) and Ann and his loving wife.
Mother Margery's in  1687 mention's daughters Ann and Sarah.

Phillips second marriage was 5.3.1694 to Lettice Church both widowed.
Lettice 's Will 1717 mentions her daughter in law daughter of her late husband Phillip Beatrice Justice widow and her cousin Mary Jennings of London.
Phillip s of Phillip of Drayton was apprenticed to John  Crichlowe of the fishmongers company  London 17.2.1669/70 so he was born c1655.
So the christening in Norton in Hales 31.1.1652 would fit.

Dorothy Cotton relict of William Cotton of Bellaport Hall leaves a Will 1697  mentioning Phillip Cotton as her cousin?,his children Beatrice and william and his wife Lettice and she mentions a daughter in law Beatrice Birch.
William seems to have been buried 6.10.1684 Drayton in Hales.

Hope that helps
ps an online tree has William Cotton 1590-1639 of Bellaport Hall grandfather of the William married to Dorothy who died 1697 with a younger son Phillip b c 1620 at Alkington. So your Phillip would be first cousin to William late husband of Dorothy.
