Muckletown's History
« on: Saturday 02 July 16 19:05 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me when Muckletown was founded, plus when/where the first known reference to it can be found?
Cheers,
Bob

You will have to give us more information. "Muckletown" is like "Newton" or "Middleton", only part of a name. It will be "Muckletown of ......" What parish is it in?

It's about two miles north of Alford.

If you use the National Library of Scotland's maps website and locate Muckletown on a 19th century 6" Ordnance Survey map, then change the map to Roy's mid-18th century military map, you find that Muckletown does not appear by that name then. It is a fermtoun on the Knockespock estate.

Knockespock, in the parish of Clatt, means "bishop's hill". It is stressed on the -esp-. The mansion house is built round a late 16th century laird's house. It belonged/belongs (?) to the Fellowes-Gordon family.

The full name of the place would be Muckletown of Knockespock, to distinguish it from Netherton of Knockespock etc..

Muckletown/Muckleton is an area not a town.  In early maps there was a Muckleton Croft to the east.

In the 19th C Muckleton Steeding was built.

If look on Google Maps you will see there are a few farms and that's about it.
