The current name is May Terrace.  (Shown as Station Avenue in the 1915 Valuation Rolls, and as May Terrace, Station Avenue, in the 1930 Valuation Rolls).

Hibee

The 1912/13 trade directory lists several names for May Terrace, Giffnock

William Hall Insurance Inspector
John Mccallum
S McCallum
D.M McMillan
J Robertson
F.J Shaw

It's possible that May terrace was its original or intended name but it was changed to stop confusion with May Terrace in Mount Florida - or that as in some areas the road was named Station Avenue but the houses named May Terrace by the builders (probaby made them more attractive to would be buyers  ::) ) - an example of this can be seen today in Pollokshaws (Afton Terrace on Pollokshaws Road)

This looks useful, Falkryn, thanks.

Nobody in the street (some of whom have lived here for decades) had any knowledge of the name Station Avenue.  It emerged during stone-cleaning at No.1.

Not sure about the Pollockshaws idea, as May Terrace forms the whole of the road, and it couldn't really have been a sub-name for just part of it.

Possibly a better comparison would have been Observatory Road off of Byres Road in the West End. The houses on the left hand side of the road are called Loudon Terrace and run the length ofObservatory Road until the road name changes.

It really depends how much of the street was built by the one builder - much less council red tape in those days  ;)

It might be worthwhile contacting East Renfrewshire Archives or Giffnock Library to see if they have any of the original plans

All of the street was built by one builder (it only had one built-up side).

I'll try the Library.

Thanks.
