Any pointers as to where my Gt Gt Grandfather is buried ?
« on: Wednesday 06 July 16 14:18 BST (UK) »
Hello fellow RootsChat members,

I am back after a 10 year family history break! , but always suspected i would be at some point !
The trigger being that my Dad died six weeks ago and this has lead to lengthy conversations with my Mum re: family members/ history.
She thought her Gt Grandfather Edgar Knight Died Jun Qtr 1926, Huddersfield, aged 48 was buried in Kirkheaton churchyard possibly followed by an infant grandaughter.
I am pretty sure i have now established he is not at Kirkheaton, but blowed where to look from here. If anyone could find his burial place on the burial index for me it would be very much appreciated.
(I don't want to go back to Mum declaring ' he's not in Kirkheaton but i don't know where he is').

Kind Regards
Tracey

Hi,
Check the news paper for that date, year etc. for his Obituary.
That may say in which Church yard he is buried.
If you pass on and you don't need to have a Post Mortem and you get buried in a Church graveyard, you are not listed in the deceasedonline.
I only found this out by chance, when I looked for my Uncle's record I deceasedonline.

Possibly, you need to know exactly where he was living in 1926, as that could be a clue as to where he is buried.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Also, by that time, churchyards were pretty full so cemeteries need to be considered.

Thanks for the replies last address i know was Mount Zion Road, Huddersfield taken from the 1911 census. I would love to check the newspapers but moved away 20 years ago so access to the local newspaper archives isn't practical for me, i doubt if there would be a newspaper obituary, they were mill workers.

I think Mount Zion Road, comes under Kirklees District Council, who appear to run a grave search, via their Bereavement Services.

Hi Tracey

Your Gr Grandad is buried at Kirkheaton but not in the churchyard.  He's in Laneside Cemetery.

24/04/1926 Edgar Knight   48    176 Mount Zion Road    Moldgreen   Plot number2173

The information is available on www.kirkheaton.info.  You need to register to access it but it's free.
There is also a cemetery plan with plot numbers, but it doesn't look as if Edgar has a headstone.

Sandra.
