Margaret King
« on: Wednesday 06 July 16 19:56 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am hoping someone might be able to help. I have Margaret King born about 1840 in Co. Westmeath. I don't know where or when she married but it appears to be to a James McMahon. I don't know where he was from originally either but they seem to have gone to Lurgan, Co. Armagh and settled there.

I would be interested in finding out where in Co. Westmeath she was born and who her parents were and if possible anything about the man she married.

If anyone can shed any light please on this I would be grateful.

Is this the woman in 1901
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Armagh/Lurgan_Urban/Arthur_Street/1024571/

It would be best to work back step by step.
A child's birth or Baptisim to check her husband's name
Than their marriage and so on.

Hi Sinann

Yes that is the right family and I have been able to get some of the details on the children born to Margaret King and James McMahon but I have hit a brick wall regarding details about themselves. I have no idea where exactly they were born or who their parents were except for the fact that the census states that Margaret was from Co. Westmeath. Thanks Sinann for looking.

What date is the earliest birth of their children?
That would give an approx date to look for a marriage.

I have a Mary Jane born in 1865. That seems to be in the Lurgan area also. Maybe I should try a year or  two before that for a marriage in the Lurgan area on the assumption that is where they met. I will try that and let you know how I get on.

The NLI only has marriages for Shankill from 1866 but RootsIreland (subscription) has them from 1822

One of the Northern Ireland sites might be better.

Civil Reg only started in 1864 so hopefully their marriage made it on there.

Should have asked before, have you found the baptisms of the son Patrick and daughter Catherine that are with her on the Census.
Also are any of the sponsors on the baptisms of any of the children Kings or McMahons?

Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages started in 1864. A daughter Mary Jane was born in 1865 and there doesn't seem to be any sign of a civil marriage record so I suspect it was a Catholic ceremony which took place before 1864. Based on Margaret's age (60) in 1901 census it's possible one or more children were born before 1864. It's also possible that Elizabeth's twin didn't survive.

I did notice that Mary Jane's (1865) birth is listed as Montiaghs (probably the registration sub-district) so you might want to expand the search area for church records if nothing earlier is found in Shankill Parish. Baptisms from 1822-
