Scotlandsplaces - Newmachar
« on: Friday 08 July 16 08:33 BST (UK) »
Hi, I can't find Newmachar, or surrounding places of the parish, in any of the old ordinance maps in Scotlandsplaces. Do you know is it just that those maps haven't been scanned yet?

Curious.

I went to the NLS maps site, selected Ordnance (not Ordinance BTW) Survey six-inch, zoomable map of all Scotland, typed 'newmachar' in the search box and it produced http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/?nlsgazarea=uk&nlsgaz=newmachar#zoom=16&lat=57.2706&lon=-2.1928&layers=5

Interesting to see that there was no village there when the map was surveyed in 1866 - only the New Machar Inn and New Machar Station. Also to see that the whole of the village is south of the Inn.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I thought it odd too. In fact I didn't think I'd found the right place as there was only a station and no obvious village.

Was Newmachar one of those small settlements man of which no longer seem to exist? Or was the Newmachar Grothenwell referred to a parish rather than a village?  :-\

Have had a look  at Fullarton's "Gazetteer of Scotland"  (1842) and Groome's "Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland" (c1892) and it would appear that New Machar was only a parish and not a parish and village. Until 1621 it had formed part of Old Machar parish and was variously known as Upper Parochine of St Machar, Upper Machar  and finally New Machar. Until 1891 part of the parish was in the county of Banff. The only village mentioned is Summerhill SSW of New Machar station. "Gazetteer for Scotland"  can be found at http://www.scottish-places.info/ which contains the text of the 1880s(?) edition of Groome.
