Hi Monica,

Found a DC for an Andrew Smith who died in Craiglockhart Poor House in 1880 but death is registered by an Assistant Governor, and none of the details tie in with the tree on Ancestry.

It is never easy.

I am the first to put my hand up and say I obsess  8)

Jane was left, but think we have her now.

There is this marriage in Bath, England (there was another two names on the list, a Charles Norman and a Mercy Fear):

Jane Alston Smith and Donald Young
4th Qrt 1885
Bath Somerset
Vol. 5c and page 1070.

1891 in England has:

Donald Young 52 b. Schoolmaster and Superintendent, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland
Jane Alston Young 53 wife, Matron, b. East Lothian, Scotland
Mary Young 22
Donald Young 17
Cecilia Maud Young 14
John George Young 14
Margaret Alice Young 12

Address: Somersetshire Certified Industrial Home for Boys, Lyncombe and Widcombe, Somerset

With the young children there, looks like a second marriage for Donald Young and a first for Jane (?)

Hi Tom

Yep, never easy.

Doesn't feel right that Andrew would die in a poorhouse (even if it was the hospital side of it). There looks to be money in the family. Unless there was a situation that we couldn't even guess at... :-\

Re Jane and her marriage in 1885 to Donald Young, from the Bath Chronicle 12 Nov 1885:

Nov 11 at St Mark's Bath, by the Rev E J Wymess Whitaker, Vicar, Donald Young, Supt. Somersetshire Certified Industrial Home for Boys Bath to Jane Alston, only daughter of the late Andrew Smith, Esq. of Tranent and Tain, Scotland.

From the same newspaper, on 24 June 1916:

Deaths: Young, Jane Alston, at Kelston View, Saltford, at the age of 79.
