Hugh Heaney - Lanarkshire Strachan Family
« on: Sunday 10 July 16 12:57 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I'm afraid I need your help again.

I've now established that my grandmothers mother had an illigitimate child before she married my great grandfather. This child was known to the family at the time and lived with his mother and new step father. His name was Hugh Heaney born 126 Glasgow Road, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Jan 13 1911 - I've seen the birth certificate so can confirm that's correct. I also later saw a list which showed him living with his mother, step father and new step brother Peter however I cant remember where that source came from. After this he just disappears. There's no death listed, no marriages nothing so I am at a loss as to what happened to him.

Please can someone help me out with this - Its one of the final pieces of the puzzle on my tree.....

Thanks in advance Paul

Could he have changed his surname to that of his stepfather?

Scotlands People is showing only one death for a Hugh Strachan born 1911 +- 1yr and he died between 1971-1980.  Have you already viewed and ruled out that entry?

If so - only other possibility is that he was fostered/informally adopted and took the name of the family who "adopted" him

I can't add anything I'm afraid - I found the death entry in the GRO indexes on Ancestry.

The only way to find out further information would be to purchase a copy of his death certificate  (order direct from GRO not Ancestry - cost £9.25 - the reference numbers you will need are 1. District name and number - West Berks 3191, 2. Entry Number 134, 3. Date of Registration - 03/2002) - this will show if he was living in the area or possible on a holiday (although at 91 wouldn't have thought the latter too likely).   If the informant was a family member this could lead to finding out any family he may have had.
