Kilhullen/Kilcullen in Co. Sligo?
« on: Monday 11 July 16 05:55 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

My great-great grandmother was born in Sligo, I believe. Her name was Mary, and her father's name as listed on her death cert. in Pennsylvania was John Kilhullen. She also had a sister Kathryn. My main question is about the name Kilhullen. I've looked around and I only seem to find the name Kilhullen in the U.S. I read a post by someone on another site saying that Kilhullen is a change in spelling of the name Kilcullen that happened after arrival in the U.S. Can anyone help me out on this? Should I be looking for records of Kilcullens in Ireland instead? There don't seem to be any Ireland records with the name Kilhullen that I can find.

Thanks for any help you can give. :)

If you go to http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/  and just put Kil*ullen  and Sligo for 1901 Census you won't find Kilhullen

Hi,
Kilhullen is not in the rootsireland list of names.
Kilcullen is listed.
Using "exact spelling" there are 10 Mary Kilcullen with the father John, 1829 to 1899 born in Sligo.
If you let me know the approx. year, then I may be able to help.

This thread is really just about the surname i would say - Kilhullen or Kilcullen whilst the previous one was about the people.
I posted for reference if people started searching.
As you have said, the Sligo references are Kilcullen.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I posted a separate thread because I just wanted input as to whether it's likely that Kilhullen is actually Kilcullen. It seemed likely to me, but when doing this kind of research I don't want to assume anything if I can help it.

The approximate year of birth for Mary is between about 1863 to 1868 (I have some conflicting info). Father is John Kilhullen and mother is Jane Linny (variant spellings). I lean more towards the 1863 estimate because it's based on her statement of age on her marriage license. The later estimate is based on the informant's info for her death cert. Thanks.

Hi,
Can I just check with you.....
In other posts you mentioned McGuinness or different spellings.
Did Jane Linney marry him?
