Convict Ship crew list circa 1830
« on: Monday 11 July 16 10:23 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have come across a record of the Convict Ship 'Surrey I' arriving in Van Diemans Land (VDL) on 14 December 1829. It had left London on 11 August 1829. Listed as one of the seaman is a Thomas Halbert.

Is anyone able to tell me if there would be a corresponding record of a Thomas Halbert arriving back in England who sailed aboard the Surrey on its return journey?

There is a Thomas Halbert leaving VDL on 23 April 1830 aboard the Bee arriving in Port Jackson, Sydney on 5 May 1830. He is a passenger.

If the Thomas Halbert mentioned above left the Surrey for greener pastures would he have worked his way to VDL or jumped ship?

Any suggestions for further research would be appreciated. Im hoping to rule out/rule in this Thomas Halbert as the progenitor of the New Zealand Halberts.

In 1833 and 1834 a Thomas Halbert sails from New Zealand to Port Jackson which was a port well known for whaling ships and trade - the occupation of our Thomas Halbert.
