Mary Petford who marries William Arch gives her father as George Petford, currier(I think). Is it possible  that she is not of the Mott Street family(?),but, perhaps a sister of George Petford given as a blacksmith(allied trade?),married to Clara, and living in Saint Thomas Birmingham in 1851,where William Arch is in 1841.
This George and Clara, have a son William Petford, born circa 1855,who perhaps could be the William married to Keziah with a son Edward Petford, given born 1879 in the 1881 census.

Roger

I've just found another record that may not support the above.George Petford of Mott Street,a stoker, father George Petford, currier, marries Ann Walker(father Shadrach a jeweller) in 1842 in St Georges Birmingham.

There is an Edward Arch birth registered Dec. quarter 1878 in Solihull (ref 6d 585).Yardley,Solihull is of course where William and Mary Arch are in 1871 with Susan(possibly Petford) and William(I don't suppose he could be a Petford also,as his birth is approx that of the husband of Kezia in 1881).
William and Mary are too old for Edward to be their son, perhaps he is an illegitimate son of Susan or William.
If it were me I would buy the birth certificate for Edward born 1878.

Thank you for all of that work Roger, I think you are right and I will have to buy the birth certificate. I had been hoping that there would have been some more evidence one way or the other eg 1881 census with Edward and William Arch in the same household but no such luck.

Kind regards

I think I have largely traced George and James from Mott Street, and I can't say a connection is obvious.Susan would have had to married a Petford and there's no sign of that.
If you are missing any census references you want, let me know and I'll see if I have them.

It turns out that I do have the 1861 and 1871 census records for William and Mary Arch  ::)

It is just the 1881 that I can't find for William Arch (born c 1854, but he seems to get his age wrong every time he gives it). I am certain that I have the correct family as we have a certificate presented to William P Arch aged 15 from a Birmingham Lithographic Printers firm which corresponds with the 1871 census.

If you have any of the census records for the Petfords I would be grateful.

Thank you Roger.

I have ordered the 1878 Birth certificate so will have to wait and see what it says.
