Knodishall - Theberton. Geater & Balls families
« on: Monday 11 July 16 17:10 BST (UK) »
I've recently been looking at the Manorial Court Books for Leiston and noticed that there seem to be a Geater involved in the two mills owned by the Balls family.

Thomas Geater seems to have a link to the mills that Henry Balls owned through his wife, Mary.  She inherited (or received) a 4th share from Henry Balls (along with Elizabeth How, Esther Lumkin and Ann Wright) in 1818.

I'm thinking that they may be daughters of Henry (or nieces?).  Any ideas would be great!

Was Thomas' wife Mary Balls? There is this baptism

Thomas Geater baptised 8th August 1813 Kelsale, Suffolk son of Thomas Geater and Mary Balls.

Hi groom,

Thanks for that connection!  I've also discovered that Elizabeth How (husb Richard) was nee Balls too; so there seems to be a good family connection.  Not had so much luck with Esther Lumkin (a spinster in 1818) and Anne Wright (husb Jasper).

You may be interested that a postmill belonging to Henry Balls at Knodishall was to be sold July 1817.

Thanks Hairy (& sorry in the delay - I forget to check my emails and my service provider flags everything as "read" from time to time!!!),

I think I have this info already...was it the advert with Henry Balls as proprietor?  Every bit helps even if it means checking my db.

Cheers,
