McCaffrey Family

My Great Grandfather on my father's maternal side is a John McCaffrey born in 1843c we think in Fermanagh. He married an Elizabeth Moules in the UK.

We believe his father may have been Patrick McCaffrey born in 1814c who may have married a Margaret Gallagher.

No trace or proof of all this being correct. Can any one help?

"He married an Elizabeth Moules in the UK." Ireland? England? what's his father's name and occupation on the marriage record?

What religion do you think we was? if Catholic try here- although having father's name will help identify or rule out any record that you might find.

John McCaffrey married Elizabeth Moules in England. Cumbria area.They brought up their family in Middlesbrough where my grandmother was born.

Roman Catholic for certain.

I received the following information from my second cousin Peter McCaffrey who was a Lecturer at Aberdeen University. Unfortunately he died soon after, before I could take him into taking a DNA test.


John, 37 b. Ireland [Monaghan], labourer (ironworks) [married Eliza in Wigton, a weaving town, 18 Sept. 1866, giving age as 23]  John’s occupation is given on James’s birth certificate and on Anne’s
marriage certificate as “railway labourer”.
Eliza [nee Moules], 34, b. Ireland [b. Wicklow, d. 24 Jan 1924.  Born 1846-7, if this “34” and the “19” in 1866 are correct.]

So our ancestor John Mccaffrey married Elizabeth Moules in Wigton UK 18th September 1866.

Peter quotes that John was born in Monaghan. Not sure if this is true.

The marriage was registered in Wigton, Cumberland in Jul – Sept 1866, Volume 10b page 654. If you order a copy of that marriage certificate, it should give you John’s father’s name and occupation. You can order a copy from IPS in Southport. It should cost £9.25.
