Is there or was there a place called Kingston Bonsey, Sussex in 1610
« on: Wednesday 13 July 16 00:59 BST (UK) »
I am reading a will as per the attached clipping;  a transcription notes the abode of Morgan Newington in 1610 is Kingston Bonsey.

I have searched some old maps but unable to locate such a place however I did locate a place called Kingston by Sea and I am wondering others opinions.

Hi,

I wonder if it is an old way of spelling / saying Kingston Buci - near Shoreham in Sussex?

I can't read the rest of the will at the moment as I'm using my iPad so I don't know how likely that would be?  There is another Kingston over near Lewes too.

Otherwise known as Kingston By Sea?

There is also a third Kingston - Kingston Gorse, near Worthing.

Thanks so much  KGarrad & Liz_in_Sussex.   :)

I think it sounds phonetically like Kingston by Sea.

It is Kingston Bowsey (here spelled Bousey) and associated with the Newington family, amongst many other Sussex families.  It lies between Southwick and Shoreham and was originally 'Buci'  as Liz says. From its pronunciation it was assumed in the the past to mean 'by sea.'

Westy, I'm on my way out but I suggest you look at this page:

I think I have some additional information on the Newingtons in a book here, but don't have time to look just now  :(

The Newingtons appear to be associated with many of my family, but no proof at the moment that there was familial link.  Also check out ESRO catalogue - which is amazing in its detail:
