LLANFOIST Marriage in 1834
« on: Wednesday 13 July 16 07:56 BST (UK) »
Ive found a transcript on findmypast and freereg for a marriage between Joseph Harris and Mary Philpott on 29 September 1834, but the transcripts do not include additional info.  I'm trying to find a father's name for her (her widowed name is Mary Philpott, nee Jones) or witness.  The marriage was in (according to the transcript)  Llanfihangel Torymynydd.  Very many thanks anyone who can assist.

I'm afraid that' all you are likely to get!

Information on a Marriage Record: 1754 - 1837

In 1754, new legislation was passed which stated that everyone had to marry in a licensed parish church in their own parish.

A pre-printed marriage register was used to record marriages, and this recorded the following:

- Name & Parish of both the Bride and Groom
- Date
- Signatures of Bride & Groom
- Signature of Clergyman performing the ceremony
- Signatures of two witnesses

Yes, on all census reports, she was born Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.  Her age varies from census to census and being a Jones that matters ;).  Age 25 in 1841, 36 in 1851, 42 in 1861, 50 in 1871, 6(!) I presume 60 in 1881, 70 in 1887 at burial.  I'm looking at Mary's between 1810 and 1817...several to choose from in Wolverhampton (and Bilston).  I can't decide which baptism is hers there.

I realize the records don't have to list the father, but I've seen quite a few that do plus other details.  Guess it was up to the clergy ultimately.  Sometimes witnesses are a good one too, unless the clergy stepped in again!
