Hampshire: Arthur BRENTON, Born 1833/34, Christchurch
« on: Wednesday 13 July 16 14:41 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Arthur BRENTON, the son of John BRENTON and Keturah BRENTON (nee WALDEN), was born in 1833/1834 in Christchurch, Hampshire.   He had 8 brothers/sisters, Sarah, John, Thomas, Harriet, Henry, Jesse, Joseph and Jane.  On 28/02/1850 he was sentenced at Winchester to transportation for 7 years, later commuted when he was released on licence from Parkhurst Prison on 07/12/1853.

I can find no further information for him and wonder if anyone can help.

Thank you

My first instinct was that there had to be earlier offence/s to warrant that sentence, so you may like to pursue other possibilities using an alias, e.g. his mother's maiden surname?

Have you been able to ascertain on what grounds he was granted his release on licence?  Presumably there would have been conditions attached?

I did some further research after the original posting and discovered he was to be employed post-release by Captain Auley MAITLAND from Jersey.   But, sadly, nothing developed and, of course, there has only been your response.

The pending tray beckons for Mr. BRENTON it seems.

Thank you Kim,

The details of the marriage of his parents fills in a gap.   A pity there is no other information for him to break down the "brickwall"!!

A long shot maybe, but what if he went to Australia after all but not as a convict.

There is a newspaper showing an Arthur Brenton as the victim of a Break-in in the New South Wales Police Gazette 1854-1930.  Have tried attaching it here but the file is too large (It is also on Ancestry if you are a member)

There is also a passenger record that may be relevant.
Arthur Brenton
Port of Departure:   London Via Adelaide and Melbourne
Port of Arrival:   Sydney, New South Wales
Voyage Arrival Date:   15 Nov 1877
Vessel Name:   Cuzco

Hello Richard,

Thank you for your posting.   Some very interesting detail, opening a plausible area of possibility to explore.

I looked quickly through some of the NSW indexes for BDM and passenger listings but, sadly, nothing positive.  My best answer is to post a topic on RootsChat Australia (NSW) and hopefully there may be some good feedback.

Thank you once again

I think you might be wise to amend his birth range, as baptism date alone is no indication that he was born in 1833 and, in any event, birth dates pre- and post-1837 Civil Registration were only as good as the knowledge or honesty of the provider.    By a change of name and reduction of age a repeat offender hoped the authorities might miss earlier convictions, thereby attempting to influence sentencing in his/her favour.

Have you also considered that he might have travelled as crew?

Good Evening,

The Australian (NSW) research proved negative sadly, the Arthur BRENTON arriving in Sydney in 1877 was too young, born 1850.   So back to the UK and consider name, age variations etc.   At least there is a fair certainty the correct parents have been identified.

For now,
