Hi,

Just a thought about your search, I've had trouble finding a Captain Auley MAITLAND from Jersey but I have found a reference to a Captain AULEY of Maitland, Jersey.

Western Daily Mercury. 15 August 1863
Marriage
AULEY - GORE  August 11, at St Clement's, Jersey. By the reverend Charles MARRETT. Captain Frederick A. AULEY, Captain Royal Artillery, second son of Captain AULEY, Maitland, Jersey, to Annie Matilda, second daughter of the late Thomas G. Gore, Esq., of Sydney.

It doesn't help find Arthur BRENTON but it might open other places to look.

Regards,
Daisy

It appears there are variants for the AULEY surname throughout printed records:

Irish Times - Tuesday 22 September 1863
Anley and Russell—September 16, at Holy Trinity Church, Dover, by the Rev H A Hammond, MA, Captain Henry T Anley, the Buffs, third son of Captain Anley, Maitland, Jersey, to Rachel Eliza third daughter of Captain Russell, Ravensworth and Roslyn Hall, New South Wales. No cards.

First instincts often lead to interesting facts, and sometimes another surname variant, as in Southampton Sessions:

July 1849 sentenced to two months imprisonment and twice whipped Arthur WALDEN als BRINTON for Larceny before conv'd of Felony.

Oct 1848 with Imp[erfect] degree of instruction aged 16 Arthur WALDEN sentenced to 21 days imprisonment for Larceny. [At Boldre, stealing a rabbit gin.]

Those offences are likely the two previous convictions that resulted in the 7 years' Transportation sentence for Arthur BRENTON recorded in the Proceedings of Assizes at Winchester on 28 Feb 1850.

Hello dee-jay,

I have scoured the records using BRENTON, BRINTON and WALDEN but, sadly, except for the fact he was to be employed post-release from Parkhurst Prison in Jersey I am no further forward.

The joys of genealogy and brick walls ::)
