Rebecca AGAS
« on: Thursday 14 July 16 13:25 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I would like to trace the birth record for Rebecca Agas.
In 1830 she married Samuel Leak, in Sculcoates Hull.
On the 1851 census they are living in Leeds, her age is 42, & her place of birth is given as Beverley.
Sadly I can't trace Rebecca or her family in Beverley.
Any help to solve this problem would be much appreciated.
Thanks

The only birth I can see showing up isn't near Beverley, variation of Agas and a few years out too.

Rebecca AGAR bpt. 24 April 1803 in Stokesley, daughter of George a husbandman.

Same baptism also appears in the Westerdale registers, same date but father a labourer in that record.

Hi

I think Samuel Leake is in Doncaster on his own, no wife. But a George Dyson with him.

Same occupation.

I think wife Rebecca is in Leeds 1841 surname LEECH with three daughters - Ann, Mary and Elizabeth.

I can see baptisms for Mary and Elizabeth. It would seem the family were in Manchester before the 1841 census

Elizabeth bpt. 20 March 1839 Manchester Cathedral. Parents Samuel and Rebecca, fathers coach maker.

Hello Claire
The Rebecca in Leeds (1841 Census) is the right person. Samuel was in Doncaster then, presumably for his work.
I have tried a number of searches for Rebecca Agar / Agas, & other variations & Rebecca Agar, 1803 always comes out first so I think she is a probable contender for my "Rebecca"
In 1841 there is a George Agar living in Bulmer near Malton, but I can't be sure if he is Rebecca's father, but the census shows a few Agars in the area.
Perhaps her father was looking for work & they moved to the Beverley area when Rebecca was young?
In the early 19C working class families had more to worry about than getting birthdays & origins right.
Thanks for your help.
Malcolm

Hmm, so by the looks of it you already had the 1841 for Rebecca, never mind, ever thought of obtaining one of the children's birth certificates post 1837
to see if her surname is Agas/Agar, or has this already been done?
