French Water Gypsies

I was told that my ancestors on my Mums side were water gypsies from France family name of
Margrie but i can not find any trace ,i can only find the name from Brigport Dorset

If you put up some names and dates people may be able to help you further.

The surname Margrie was first seen in Suffolk. One of the earliest examples of the name was found in a French Church in the  London registers and was a Huguenot refugee.

Possibly tracing the family back may reveal some French ancestry

Try using familysearch.org that is a free website, some of the French Church records are on there.

They are also on Ancestry a sub site and FindMyPast, another sub site.

I just did a search on Google for any instances of the name.

Most of my French ancestry has been researched with the above sites. If you do manage to find a French link and where your ancestors originated there are French BMD online too.
