Race horse owners
« on: Thursday 14 July 16 18:58 BST (UK) »
Can anyone identify a racehorse owner "S. L. Fox" of Bramham, active before 1844, maybe also later?  He's named in a report of the 1834 Catterick Bridge meeting.  My great-great grandfather, William Wetherell, is said in his obit (1881) to have been one of his jockeys and did ride one of his horses at this meeting. He would then have been around 26.

I assume the owner is a member of the Lane Fox family of Bramham Park, but the only "S." I've found doesn't seem to fit the bill.

Any help would be most welcome.  My knowledge of horseracing is virtually zero!

Many thanks
Joyce

Thank you all for ideas.

I did consider Sackville Walter Lane-Fox, but I couldn't see any mention of a stable, either, though it's not impossible he owned racehorses. I'd have assumed he was too busy being an MP to get that involved. He was, apparently, a serious and unlucky gambler!

It's not his son Sackville George, who'd be too young.

The William Wetherall in the Westminster Census is not mine. In 1841 he was living with his new wife in Richmond and in 1851, was at Holywell in Wales, where he became Clerk of the Course.

Keeping an open mind.
Thanks again
Joyce

The Morning Post April 7th 1824

Pontefract Spring Meeting - mentions 'Rode by the owners 2 miles'

- Mr Sackville Fox's br.h. Selim - 13st 7lb

- appears to have been placed 2nd.

:) Looking good, for some reason the Fox family also used the surname Conyers in the census returns I have looked at, children shown as Fox, eg Sackville G Fox b 1828 but many more?

If it was flat racing then this book might help
Biographical Encyclopaedia of British Flat Racing
There may be a similar publication for steeplechase racing.
