Joseph Patrick Aloysius Callaghan - kia 1/7/16 on the Somme
« on: Saturday 16 July 16 08:34 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

This is my first post so be gentle with me! Although of Irish extraction (Co Wexford) I have little or no knowledge of Irish genealogy sources.

I am in the final phases of compiling a book on the officers who were killed on the Somme on 1/7/16. All of my proceeds from the sale of the book will go to an end-of-life hospice.

I was wondering whether someone with expertise of Dublin and Irish genealogy could help me fill in a few details of the family of the above officer who was killed with the Machine Gun Corps (he originally served with the Leinsters).

My opening text for him runs:-

"Joseph Patrick Aloysius Callaghan was born in Dublin on 13 April 1888 the fourth son of Thomas J Callaghan J.P. (who had business premises at 12-16 Dame Street, Dublin) and Kate Callaghan [1859-]. He had two brothers Thomas D Callaghan of 48, Pemberton Gardens, Upper Holloway, London and Stanislaus P Callaghan of 98 St Stephens Green, Dublin and a sister Catherine Callaghan."

Can anyone help to fill in the gaps please the time period would be 1914-1918?

i) Thomas J - what does the J stand for and what year was he born and what year did he die?
ii) 12-16 Dame Street, Dublin - what was his business?
iii) [1859-] - what year did she die?
iv) Thomas D - what does the D stand for?
v) Stanislaus P - presumably Patrick but was it?

Thanks for reading this and for any help.

Joe

1911- mother Catherine is widowed- children's occupations probably connected to the family business:

Thomas J. Callaghan died 26 June 1907:

Here's the Callaghans in 1901- Thomas Joseph's occupation given as merchant dredging!

So is the Thomas Joseph with widow Catherine who died in 1907 the right one?

J.P.A. Callaghan's probate entry calls brother Stanislaus P. 'gentleman':

Yes, just checked original image and found the transcription error!

Suspect that some of the children might be away at school during census.

Wow!

Thank you all for your expert help - there is no way I could have achieved this on my own!

You have challenged much in my extract and also answered some of my 'exam questions'. I need to process this information in slower time but in the meantime please continue to post replies.

The first thing I need to do is to photograph his officer's papers from the National Archive in London. I am concerned about the discrepancy in his date of birth which may be a transcription error on my part when I transcribed the papers over 10 years ago (no digital cameras then!).

So please keep this thread running and thank you again for all who have replied so far.

Joe
