Doody/Doodie family
« on: Sunday 17 July 16 08:45 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am trying to find out about Mary Doody/Doodie b.1842 in Wexford.

Mary first turns up in Ballarat Australia in gold rush days as the mother of an illegitimate child. The baby was Agnes Mary daughter of local landowner and Sottish immigrant Benjamin Hepburn, she was born in 1866.
There are very few records for Mary, the first one I can find is the birth certificate for her daughter Agnes in Ballarat where it gives her place of birth as Wexford and the next is the marriage certificate for the same daughter in Edinburgh. Agnes went to Scotland to marry her first cousin, also called Benjamin Hepburn, in 1884. On the marriage certificate her parents are Benjamin and Mary Hepburn nee Hepburn. They both seem to be present and staying in the house of the bridegrooms family (my great great grandparents) which must have been strange because everyone knew that Mary wasn't Benjamin's wife.

The last mention that I have of Mary is the death certificate of her daughter Agnes in 1894 where they give her maiden name as Doody.
This isn't a lot to go on and I have exhausted all the records in Australia and Edinburgh and still can't place her family.
Please can anyone point me in the right direction of any records in Ireland that might help. I feel that she has been ignored and i would like to find out about her.
Thanks
Alison

Difficult without knowing where in Wexford, a parent's name and religion.
But something is better than nothing so.....
Going by Irish Anchestors it's not a very common name in Wexford.

Following his links seems to be conceratrated in one area, in the south of the county along the border of Waterford.
If Mary was RC you could have a look here http://registers.nli.ie/
A likely starting point would be the parish of Suttons and work around the surrounding parishes.

Hi. Thank you. It is a place to start which is more than I had before!
Poor Mary seems to have been written out of this bit of the family history and I am determined to find out about her.

Thanks
Alison

Have you tried finding Mary on Passenger list ? She may have travelled with relations

The passenger list might give more info on where she came from.

What a great document, I haven't come across this site before so this is very exciting,  thank you.
This puts the Doody family in Wexford with real documentation.
