Elijah Eaton, Ecclesfield
« on: Tuesday 19 July 16 06:35 BST (UK) »
Trying to establish the father of Elijah Eaton born 1793 (Elijah married a Sarah Ibbotson 22 November 1830) I do believe his father was a Joel Eaton but cannot confirm? If anyone can assist with something to prove this I would be grateful.
Ibbotson, de Woolfson, Haynes, Chapman, Shoveler

HI

Have looked that up, and yes it does say Joseph. There is also the same hint showing  on Anc...but have just noticed when reviewing the Anc hint further... it says Joel Eaton. So a little confusing?

You're only likely to resolve this by looking at the actual Parish Register.
Available at Sheffield Archives.

OTOH I think I would trust FamilySearch over Ancestry for transcriptions! ;D

A Joel Eaton married Sarah Bunting in Ecclesfield on 1 Aug 1798 - one of the witnesses was a Joseph Joel Eaton.

added
confused by this marriage - 2 BTs with different dates.
found PR now -  marriage 5th Aug by licence (One BT said 1st Aug by Banns).
wit Joel Eaton and Joseph Loxley.
Licence transcript says Joel was 25.

Not sure where you found the hint on Ancestry - the entry for Elijah's baptism is taken from Family Search (father is Joseph), as is his marriage to Sarah Ibbotson 1830.

As KG suggests, you need to view the parish records to verify the correct information.

Transcription by Sheffield & District FHS
Elijah Eaton baptised 12 May 1793 at St Mary Ecclesfield - father is Joseph of Beelywood (no mother named)

Elijah married by Licence - 18 November 1830 - intended venue Ecclesfield PC
Transcription of marriage Bond
Elijah Eaton aged 37 of Ecclesfield
Sarah Ibbotson aged 26 of Bradfield

NBI - Elijah Eaton - 12 January 1866 aged 73 at St Mary Ecclesfield
Elijah is said to have died 8 January 1866.  Late of Buxton, a Tilter and a widower.  Administration granted to Elijah Eaton of Middlewood (Ecclesfield) Merchant, the son and only next of kin.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

If you want to see the BT entry for Elijah's baptism you may have to change his forename to Elizah  :o  A very clear image  ;)
