Yes, I found it very strange as well.  Not sure whether viewing the Bond and Allegation would throw any light on the matter.  :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Marriage – Bradfield – 14 October 1771 - Joseph Eaton and Christiana Ward, both of this chapelry.

Baptism – St Mary, Ecclesfield – 1 June 1803 – Ann daughter of Joel Eaton of Outybridge

Baptism – St Mary, Ecclesfield – born 13 March, baptised 21 April 1811 Joel, son of Joel Eaton of Middlewood.

Burial – St Mary, Ecclesfield – 8 January 1817 -Joseph Eaton of Beeleywood, aged 70.

Marriage - St Mary, Ecclesfield – 3 March 1823 – Richard Mount and Christiana Eaton married by Banns.  Joel and Ann Eaton are the witnesses.

There is baptism of Christian Ward d/o Joseph Ward of Worrall on 25 Dec 1754 at Bradfield, so if it was the right one, she would be around 17 or so at marriage. Could be producing children for quite a number of years.

The 1823 marriage doesn't say whether either party as widowed, but could be a 69 year old Christina remarrying.

If they were brothers then there is 20 years between them.  Elijah baptised 1793.

Transcription of the marriage licence for Joel dated 4 July 1798 says that Joel is 25 of Ecclesfield, and Sarah is 21 of Ecclesfield.  So born around 1773.

Joel Eaton buried 8 September 1856 at St Mary, Ecclesfield, aged 84 of Clown in Derbyshire.  So born around 1772.

If Christiana wife of Joseph was as young as I think when married, Joel could have been her first child and Elijah one of her last. So could be brothers

added
Baptism of Joel Eadon (sic) s/o Joseph of Beeleywood 18 Jun 1773. BT so could account for spelling.

Yes, much more likely - Christiana senior would have been slightly old  :o

And I think you're probably right about Joel
