Upton Street, Manchester c1821
« on: Tuesday 19 July 16 12:45 BST (UK) »
looked on old maps and can't find it

found all these refs but no map details:

1 - Upton Street Mill, off London Road, Manchester

2 - Upton Street Fire Station, Manchester "was built on land that already included a large house (No. 260 – I think – Stockport Road), with the station effectively being built in the back garden, with the access along the side (Upton) Street

3 - The Upton Hotel, a Threlfalls house, was situated on the corner of *Mornington Street and Upton Street just off Stockport Road near Ardwick Green

(*the corner shop between Churchill Street and Mornington Street Chorlton on Medlock /Ardwick)

Upton Street is it Ardwick or Chorlton - is it off London Road or Stockport Road - did it move from 1820s to the 1890s to a new area - I'm confused?

That Upton Street is not marked on the 1851 Town Plan https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/385742/396543/13/100873
It is shown on the 1891 Town Plan  https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/385742/396543/13/100874

The fire station is shown on the 1908 map.

You can see an Upton Street on the 1851 Town Plan at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/384591/397972/13/100873 but don't know if this is the one you want.

thank you so much for those - I'm guessing it is the one by Piccadilly, opposite Ducie Street (Manchester township)  that I was trying to find - thanks for pointing out where it was - I think the heat got to me and couldn't see woods for trees - lol - best wishes 8) ;)

My grandfather was born in the Upton Street Fire Station.  Can I help?
