Hi Jacqui

Let me know how you get on as I've picked up some stuff along the way but have got stuck at John and Mary Hughes in 1901 and 1911 census...
House is near to Rattin Castle - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rattin_Castle - and Martin & Sean used to climb this when they went back to help on the farm.

Census 1911
Residents of a house 7 in Rattin (Griffinstown, Westmeath)

Surname   Forename   Age   Sex   Relation to head   Religion
Hughes   John   58   Male   Head of Family   Roman Catholic
Hughes   Mary   60   Female   Wife   Roman Catholic
Hughes   Mary   28   Female   Daughter   Roman Catholic
Hughes   William   26   Male   Son   Roman Catholic
Hughes   Bridget   24   Female   Daughter   Roman Catholic
Hughes   John   22   Male   Son   Roman Catholic

Mary Anne Hughes - circa 1884 to 25/09/1946
1901 Census - aged 19 and single. Seamstress living at farm in Rattin, Kinnegad.

1911 Census - aged 28 - shown as Farmer living on farm in Rattin

Marriage Ref: Hughes Mary A  Aston ; Volume 6d; Page 1791

John Thomas Scanlon, 27 (i.e. born 1887/88), Ironmonger's Assistant,  of 79 Orchard Road, Erdington. Father Martin Scanlon, Farmer.

Mary Anne Hughes, 31, Draper's Assistant,  of 79 Orchard Road, Erdington. Father John Hughes, Farmer.

Witnesses: James Matthew Doherty & Bridget Hughes

1901 Partial Irish Census Data
http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtml

Address when died 47 Hart Road, Erdington, Birmingham

Have also got some details of Scanlons going back to Martinus Scanlon and Honoria McGoldrick in Sligo in the 1840s but reached a dead end there as well.

Match from https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGJ8-J22

Let me know if you find anything else....

Paul  :)

Was finally able to get back one generation from John Hughes & Mary Mitchell as follows:

John's father was William Hughes and his mother was Margaret Dardis (Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915).

Hi Nancy

Thanks for the update, any idea of dates of birth/marriage/death?

In the meantime you may be interested in the attached photos including:
 - the Hughes sisters (Margaret, Brigid and Mary)
 - various memoriams including some of Hughes family
 - Mary Anne circa 1915
 - Mary Anne circa 1927 with her 4 children (5th child Noreen died in 1923 aged 3 and husband John Thomas Scanlon died in 1926)

If of interest, I also have a copy of a letter dated February 1947 from Margaret Hughes to her niece Mary (Moira) following the death of Mary Anne and referring to the harsh winter snow they have had as well as Sean, Frank and Dave?

Thanks again.

Paul Scanlon

Evidently the photo did not go through because it is too big and I have tried reducing it without success.

Very exciting to see the photographs, thank you for posting.  Particularly interested in seeing the memorial card for Elizabeth, my deceased husband's (Peter
Brendan) sister.  Would be interested in seeing Mary Anne's letter to Moira (my husband's other sister) or any other info you have.  So Mary Anne married a Scanlon!  Had no info on her so appreciate.  I have a ton of information about Rattin & the family home there if you are interested.  I tried to post a picture of the Hughes' tombstone, which shows Elizabeth, the parents, Bridgid, John (Sean) and William (son of William & Elizabeth) but to no avail.

Hi Nancy

If you have any photos which can't be uploaded then you can email to me direct at (*)
and I can email back all the other details I have.

I'm planning on making a trip over to Rattin and the castle later this year so any other information you have would be very welcome!

Many thanks.

Paul
