Seeking a family who lived in Geraldton in Western Australia.
« on: Tuesday 19 July 16 15:23 BST (UK) »
I am seeking this family for a relation in Australia who has given me this information; I have asked her if she knows more but have had no reply yet. The lady is not on Roots Chat or any other forum etc.

Henry Aubrey an Englishman from Liverpool died in 1907 his death certificate indicated that he had been in Australia for 55 years – so arrived in Australia ca 1852. I am told that he married an Australian Aboriginal lady named Jane in 1865. The family lived in Geraldton in Western Australia, and he had a daughter Ellen who married - surname not known. She had twins in 1918; Charles and Mary who died shortly after.

All very vague but I hope someone would like to do a search to answer some of these questions for me.

Did a Henry Aubrey sail to Australia ca 1852?

Is there a marriage for Henry Aubrey and Jane unknown in 1865?

When was their daughter Ellen born and did they have other children?

Also anything else which may be of interest.

Hoping someone out there likes solving mysteries. ;)

Ellen L Aubrey married John E Olsen in 1907 in the Northampton registration district of WA.  Mary and Charles Olsen were born in the same Northampton district in 1918 with sequential registration numbers.  A number of other Olsen children were born in the same registration district but one can't be sure if they are the same family as the index doesn't name parents (WA BDM's, you can google the website).

I can't find a birth for Ellen or a marriage for Henry Aubrey but I haven't had a good delve into it.  I'm no WA expert either.

Regards

Bitzar.

I can't see marriage or birth either.

Could be Ellen's marriage in 1907, I was thinking it was a bit late though, considering her father had arrived out here in the 1850s.

I do agree that the death of the twins makes it likely to be the correct folk though.

Henry's death is registered 1908 at a place of registration called  "YALGOO" on the indexes. I can stand corrected but I don't think births deaths and marriages of Aboriginals commenced until much later in WA history. Up to the 1880's there was very little in the way of Roads in WA and getting around was difficult and dangerous. BMD Registration was almost impossible and I am sure many never made it into the indexes.

I think Yalgoo is in the "Wheatbelt" of WA but the early history I don't know much about. Sorry can't be more help.

Perth Gazette and Western Australian Times 9 Oct 1868
During the month of September 59,000 acres of pastoral lands were taken under lease or license. The tillage leases taken out were Avon, William Smith and T. Larkin each 100 acres;
Kojonup, W. Spencer, 100 acres; Victoria, J.Trew, 162, Henry Herbert, Henry Aubrey, Robert Starling. S. Clifton, R. Willimott, R. Rowland jun., each 100 acres; Thos. Bishop, 160 acres; Wellington, Charles Zeddi, 100 acres, Williams, A. Quartermaine, 100 acres.

I wonder if this is one of Henry's children - born c1863.

Death
AUBREY   Thomas
Father Henery [sic]    Mother Jane
District Geraldton  1963 80 years  Reg#71

Could you please type up all the information on the death certificate.  Bearing in mind that information on a death certificate is rarely accurate, Henry may not have arrived c1852.  The only AUBREY I have arriving in WA on my resource in that era, is a William who arrived in 1856 from Portland, Victoria.  He was a convict.

Interred in the Yalgoo Cemetery
AUBERY  Henry  23 December 1907  Aged 70 years - No headstone

Is his age correct in the cemetery register?  If so it indicates a birth c1837 and he would have arrived WA when he was 15 years of age.  Who was the informant on the death certificate?

Information available online....

AUBREY Henry born c1837 Liverpool, died 1907 married Jane GOVERNOR c1834-1899, in 1872 at Dongara, WA.  I find it odd that there were no births between 1873 and 1881 and a person born c1834 was having children in 1895 when she was c61 years of age.  I would suggest that Jane was born later than 1834.
