Where does the Steele family go after 1901?
« on: Wednesday 20 July 16 16:24 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to research a specific area of my family tree (using ancestry) and keep hitting a brick wall, with no progress being made. I'm looking at John Steele (b. 1850 in Uphall), who served a number of years in the Army before his discharge in 1898. In 1881 he married Agnes Rae (b. 1859 in Edinburgh). They had five children - Phyllis (b. 1883), William (b. 1884), Margaret (b. 1887), John (b. 1889), and Adam (b. 1899). They are recorded on the 1901 Scotland Census as living in 19 Rankeillor Street, Edinburgh. After that point, I have no trace of any family member, including to emigration records, death, wills, census, voting records, etc. If anyone could look into this and try to find something, I would be very grateful, as this has been a roadblock for a while.

Have you already searched for them in the 1911 Scottish census?

The answer to that is no - currently doing it now. I'll get back to you with the results, if there are any. Could solve our issues.

There certainly seems to be a match for an Adam Steele of the right age living with an Agnes in 1911 ( using the index on Scotlandspeople)

Weatherall, Greer (Ireland & Scotland)

Thanks, I'll look into it. Have found the household in 1911, still in the same place - 19 Rankeillor Street. John Steele himself died aged 67 in 1919, apparently of heart disease. The death certificate gives the indication he actually died in the street in Edinburgh. At that point, Agnes is still alive.

Hi Andrew,

Are all children at home in 1911 & are there any additions  ???

A/cestry does not do certs. nor indexes for Scotland although some transcriptions which are only a guide....just as the trees you see...same applies.
Many people have trees which are all copied from one another i.e. if 1 person has it wrong & 20 others follow suit then they will all be wrong unless you can see evidence & sources to check out for yourself with the actual certs. which can only be accessed through www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

I forgot to add....

It is best to search Steele with "soundex" option as often it can be written as Steel....I have many of them  ::)

That sounds like the one. I'll look all these up myself tomorrow.
