Birmingham 1861 Census
« on: Wednesday 20 July 16 22:25 BST (UK) »
Whilst looking at the census for 1861 an ancestor of mine has an address of "Cottage in a garden". Never came across such an address before. The district is Deritend, Aston, Birmingham. The street as far as I can see is Edward Street and the following entry is for Spring Court which I presume is in Edward Street. I can't find any reference to this street but the next street mentioned is Glover Street. I can find Glover street but not Edward Street. Any help anyone?

See "Persons Not In Houses" in the Enumerator's Instructions for the 1861 Census

I have this on one of mine,

Mine was also the 1861 census (but in Bristol) and is 'House in Garden, City Boundary behind Brittania Public House'

Thanks for both those replies. Looking at the instructions for the enumerators, I wonder if this was a permanent place for them to sleep or were they just visiting? Another question comes to mind would the houses in that street have gardens or is this just a convenient description for the enumerator to write down?

Can you give the name of your ancestor or the census reference? The 1861 Street Index has "Cottage Gardens" but no "Spring Court" there is a "Spring Hill Court".

There appear to be gardens off Little Edward Street with some small buildings as shown on this 1889 map https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/408423/286662/13/100356

From the description of the 1861 enumeration district Edward Street is Little Edward Street on the 1889 map.
