Royal Navy Reserve? Rank needed.
« on: Thursday 21 July 16 09:42 BST (UK) »
Someone told me this is the uniform of the Royal Navy Reserve, the "Wavy Navy".

If this is correct, what rank does this man hold. Presume WW1?

The gold band on his sleeves  indicates his rank.

At some points in the history of the RNVR  the bands were  "wavy"  to differentiate them from straight bands  in the full time regular RN

In the photo, it is not totally clear  whether the band is straight,   or is it just the creases in his sleeve,  What do you think?

Thank you scouseboy

Yes I do think it might be the way he is sitting that creases his sleeves. So I will pursue the search for his identity in both the regular navy and the reserves.

If he was in the regular navy would he still be a sub lieutenant?

I think the other difference   is the loop or the square.

I think he was  RN Reserve because of that square loop

He was in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve the RNVR, not the RNR.  The rank badges of the latter were quite different and can be found easily on Google.  The two organisations were different things.  The RNVR was indeed called the Wavy Navy.

I should have read the whole thread before taking the time to look up the rank markings. Definitely looks like RNVR to me. The RNR was only for professional seamen.

Thank you to all for the extra information about ranks and insignias, quite a large number of them to sort through. So he was a Reservist not a regular Navy fellow.
